Couples counselling / therapy is a broad discipline with as many styles as there are therapies. The work focuses on the dynamic between people, offering benefit to both parties jointly and individually.
Any two people can benefit from the work; it is not only for those in a traditional relationship. Friends, colleagues, siblings, parents or grand parents and children. Benefits from this work may not only be felt between the couple, but individually with each member and more widely around them, be that family, friends or work colleagues.
Often couples wait for a crisis to engage with this work, however it can be better to think ahead and not wait for a crisis to precipitate, but begin a facilitated conversation early.
Between couples in an intimate relationship some couples therapists work directly, although subtly, with psychosexual problems, addressing issues such as sexual dysfunction, loss of desire, internet porn and external relationships.
